The History of Ipanema
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Village of Ipanema began to develop and take shape. Located near famous neighborhoods like Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana, and Leblon, Ipanema Beach won the hearts of the local population and, especially, tourists. The tram lines inaugurated in 1902 facilitated the urbanization of the region, which was previously an unpopulated sandbank. The Sacaduras fountain, from the old Convento da Ajuda, was transferred to Praça Ferreira Viana (now General Osório), and the area gained sidewalks designed in Portuguese stone, becoming even more charming.
In 1918, the Colégio dos Franciscanos and the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Paz were built on Rua 20 de Novembro, now known as Rua Visconde de Pirajá. The first mass at the church was celebrated on May 12, 1921. The landscape design of Ipanema’s sidewalks is attributed to architect and landscaper Renato Primavera Marinho, in celebration of the city’s fourth centennial.
