Rio Carnival 2025: How to Get to the Sambadrome with Metrô Rio

Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival is one of the biggest parties on the planet, drawing revelers from every corner of the globe to watch the samba school parades at the Marquês de Sapucaí. However, with the city overrun by street parties, tourists, and locals alike, getting around can be a real challenge. To ensure a practical and quick commute, the Metrô Rio is your best bet for enjoying the festivities without the headache of traffic and parking.

Metrô Rio Running 24 Hours During Carnival

To handle the massive influx of passengers, Metrô Rio will operate non-stop for eight consecutive days. The special service starts at 5 AM on Friday, February 28th, and runs until midnight on Ash Wednesday, March 5th, totaling 139 hours of continuous operation. Plus, for those wanting to catch the Champions’ Parade the following weekend, the metro will also be available, running for 48 hours straight, from 5 AM on Saturday, March 8th, until 11 PM on Sunday, March 9th.

To skip the lines and speed up boarding, Metrô Rio recommends using contactless payments, accepting credit and debit cards from Visa, Elo, and Mastercard, as well as NFC devices like phones, watches, and wristbands. You can also buy or top up your Giro card, Metrô Rio’s single-ride card, or Riocard Mais in advance. Recharges can be done on the official Metrô Rio website, their app, or through RecargaPay.

Please note that the Free Fare Post at Central do Brasil/Centro station will be closed from March 3rd to 5th, resuming operations on Thursday, March 6th.
