Christ the Redeemer: A Giant of Faith and Engineering

It all began in 1859 when French Lazarist priest Pierre-Marie Boss, from the Church of the Colégio Imaculada Conceição, had a dream: to build a religious monument atop Corcovado Mountain, which rises 710 meters high. The priest recorded this vision in the book “Imitation of Christ,” from 1903.

The idea remained dormant until 1922, when Brazil celebrated the centennial of its Independence. At that moment, a competition was opened for monument projects. The winner was the designer Heitor da Silva Costa. Simultaneously, more than 22,000 women signed a petition asking President Epitácio Pessoa for authorization to build Christ the Redeemer. The proposal was that the statue be erected solely with donations from Brazilians. Thus, in 1923, the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro launched the Monument Week, raising a thousand contos de réis. Years later, new contributions were made, totaling 2,500 contos de réis (equivalent to R$ 9.5 million).

An Unforgettable Journey to the World’s Largest Art Deco Monument

The creators of Christ the Redeemer were the designer Heitor da Silva Costa, the painter Carlos Oswald and the sculptor Maximiliam Paul Landowsky. Landowsky sculpted the statue’s head and hands. Standing 38 meters tall (equivalent to a 13-story building), Christ the Redeemer has a 30-meter body and an 8-meter pedestal. Each arm has an area of 88 square meters, and the foot measures 1.35 meters. The head alone weighs 30 tons.

The statue was built in Brazil, except for the head and hands, which were molded in Paris, France. Christ’s body was sculpted in soapstone, cut into thousands of triangles and glued by hand onto a fabric. The interior of the statue consists of 12 platforms, connected by stairways, opening into the arms and head. The monument was designed to withstand winds of up to 250 km/h.

Overcoming Obstacles to Reach the Heights

The construction of Christ the Redeemer was not easy. The works lasted nine years, from 1922 to 1931, and faced several challenges, from adverse weather conditions to financial problems. The solution for transporting heavy materials to the top of Corcovado was the creation of a cogwheel train system, which still takes visitors to the monument today.
