To ensure a practical and quick commute, the Metrô Rio is your best bet for enjoying the festivities without the headache of traffic and parking.
Metrô Rio Running 24 Hours During Carnival
To handle the massive influx of passengers, Metrô Rio will operate non-stop for eight consecutive days. The special service starts at 5 AM on Friday, February 28th, and runs until midnight on Ash Wednesday, March 5th, totaling 139 hours of continuous operation. Plus, for those wanting to catch the Champions’ Parade the following weekend, the metro will also be available, running for 48 hours straight, from 5 AM on Saturday, March 8th, until 11 PM on Sunday, March 9th.

What’s the Best Station to Reach the Sambadrome?
If you have tickets for the parades at the Sapucaí, choosing the right station can make your access much easier:
- Odd-Numbered Sectors and Terreirão do Samba: Your best bet is to get off at Central do Brasil/Centro station.
- Even-Numbered Sectors: Praça Onze station is the closest and most convenient for a shorter walk.
- Parade Participants: If your samba school gathers near the “Balança Mas Não Cai” building, Central do Brasil/Centro station is ideal. For schools located near the Correios building, Praça Onze is your best alternative.
How Will the Metro Operate During Carnival?
Metrô Rio’s special operation will include adjustments to its routes:
- Friday (02/28):
- Line 2 will run between Pavuna and Botafogo.
- Lines 1 and 4 will run between Uruguai and Jardim Oceânico/Barra da Tijuca.
- Transfers between Lines 1 and 2 will be made at Central do Brasil/Centro and Botafogo stations.
- From Saturday (03/01) to Ash Wednesday (03/05):
- Line 2 will now operate between Pavuna and General Osório/Ipanema.
- Transfers between Lines 1 and 2 will happen at Central do Brasil/Centro and General Osório/Ipanema stations.
Ticket Payments and Handy Tips
To skip the lines and speed up boarding, Metrô Rio recommends using contactless payments, accepting credit and debit cards from Visa, Elo, and Mastercard, as well as NFC devices like phones, watches, and wristbands. You can also buy or top up your Giro card, Metrô Rio’s single-ride card, or Riocard Mais in advance. Recharges can be done on the official Metrô Rio website, their app, or through RecargaPay.
Please note that the Free Fare Post at Central do Brasil/Centro station will be closed from March 3rd to 5th, resuming operations on Thursday, March 6th.
